We invest in the talent and potential of our team to learn new skills and seek new experiences. We run regular training sessions, offer support to develop professional skills and encourage internal secondments and rotations between teams. Our fit-for-purpose leadership programs invest in the next generation through our apprenticeship, traineeship and scholarships.
We are big enough to offer dynamic career development opportunities, across a diverse range of disciplines and teams, yet small enough to develop and maintain relationships across the business.

Each year we support eight students at the University of Newcastle with scholarships and paid work experience
Our undergraduate scholarship programme is based on an equity-excellence model to support diversity and inclusion in the workplace. To be eligible, students need to demonstrate academic excellence and how they are facing educational disadvantage through impacts of hardship or personal circumstances.
Students are awarded a scholarship to the value of $7,000 each year, up to a maximum of three years, and offered 10 weeks paid work experience each scholarship year.
Port Waratah has been supporting early career development in the Newcastle and Hunter Region through its Scholarship Programme since 2009.
We go the extra mile to ensure we are not only supporting apprentices in the first stage of their career, but also the investment in them as leaders of the future.
Further to the standard apprenticeship programme, we expect our apprentices to participate in standard employee occupational health and safety activities, as well as a dedicated safety training and awareness programme that includes monthly meetings and personal work health and safety plans.
All apprentices are given the opportunity to enhance their skills by achieving additional licences and accreditation such as forklift driving, working at heights, rigging, confined space, firefighting, senior first aid, electrical tag and test and team leadership.
Our Graduate Programme provides real-world experience for new graduates in a range of industries looking to build their career.
The programme will be tailored to your chosen discipline, providing ongoing professional development and technical skills, training, and mentorship. As a graduate, you will gain skills in key universal areas such as project management, strategy, communication and working in a team. Graduates receive the same company benefits as an employee.
To be considered, you will need to have completed a relevant Bachelor or Master’s degree during the last two years or working towards completion this year.
Earn while you learn! Port Waratah offers traineeships for students in IT or Commercial Services (Accounting).
We tailor your traineeship programme to your chosen discipline and give you real-world experience and mentoring to kick start your career.
Port Waratah covers all course fees and textbooks and provides paid time off for trainees to attend lectures and classes.
We hold application periods at different times throughout the year for our Traineeships and Graduate programme. If you would like more information, contact hr@pwcs.com.au.
“The Apprenticeship Programme is a great experience. The best part is learning one-on-one with a tradesperson out on a job. They are always super helpful, patient and enjoy explaining all the different concepts and how everything works, connecting my study at TAFE to real experiences. The detail, expertise and knowledge that the team provides has really pushed the experience.”
“I have really enjoyed being exposed to diverse areas of work, which has helped me expand my skill set. Another rewarding aspect has been the networks I have made, and the connection formed with people. The Graduate Programme has given me the opportunity to work on extremely unique projects, allowed me to take on challenges, hone my existing skills and gain confidence.”
“Having this traineeship has helped me form a better understanding of the theory that I learn at University, through practical experience and applying my knowledge to real-life situations. It has helped me expand my exposure within a workplace environment and allowed me to further develop my time management and organisational skills, which has had a great impact on my studies.”
We’re proud to be an active member of the local community through our engagement and investment programmes.
