We’re committed to building cultural awareness within our workforce and strengthening our relationships with local First Nations communities. Our Vision for Reconciliation reflects the foundation of respect of First Nations peoples.
Acknowledgement of Country
Port Waratah acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we operate, the Awabakal and Worimi Peoples. We acknowledge their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples today.

Our Vision for Reconciliation
“Our vision for reconciliation is an inclusive and equitable future for all First peoples in the communities of the Hunter Region in which we operate.
To achieve this within Port Waratah, we commit to building and promoting an inclusive culture where First peoples’ cultures, perspectives and lived experiences are recognised, respected and valued.
We seek to make a local contribution to societal change by being an active member of Newcastle and the Hunter Region. Through building genuine, reliable and stronger relationships with local First peoples’ we can together create shared positive outcomes.”
Our Reconciliation Journey
For many years Port Waratah has been on a journey of listening to and learning from everyone in our community. This helps us improve and be a stronger more inclusive business. We are exploring how we as a business can strengthen relationships with the region's First Peoples and how we can contribute to creating more equitable and positive outcomes. We developed our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) with endorsement from Reconciliation Australia.
Our RAP Working Group was formed in 2022 comprising of members from across the organisation, including Senior Leadership and external advisors.
Port Waratah would like to sincerely thank Indyamarra Cultural Education’s Lead Aboriginal Cultural Educator, Mr David Newham for his guidance and support to Port Waratah, and local artist and Worimi man, Mr Gavin Kelly, for the inspirational artwork created to illustrate our Reconciliation Action Plan.
