During an operational inspection, a thin layer of coal dust was discovered on the wharf surface adjacent to the conveyor take up point on the Carrington Terminal Wharf. Due to the proximity to the wharf edge, it is likely some material may have also entered the harbour. The maximum quantity of coal that may have also entered the harbour has been calculated as approximately 10.9kg. No visible impacts were observed in the receiving waters. Port Waratah self-reported the incident to the EPA and took immediate action to minimise the potential environmental impacts and recovered all residual material on the wharf.

Port Waratah takes full responsibility for its actions and is committed to improving our performance through investing in our people, systems and equipment. Specifically in response to the incident, Port Waratah has changed the conveyor belt, implemented improved dust controls on the conveyor belt and reengaged with our employees on expectations of environmental performance.

Port Waratah takes our licence to operate and obligations to the community and environment seriously and respect the role Government regulation plays in protecting our Harbour. We apologise unreservedly for the incident and acknowledge that incidents of this nature are unacceptable.
