“Our strategic focus is to meet the changing expectations and demands of our employees, customers and communities, and we are immensely proud that our ongoing efforts have been recognised in winning these awards,” said the Chief Executive Officer of Port Waratah, Hennie du Plooy.

“Sustainability considerations are integral to Port Waratah’s day to day operations. We are continuously looking at how we can improve our operational, environmental and social performance to contribute to global sustainability in a local context.”

In the areas of environmental performance, Port Waratah aims to go above and beyond the targets it is legally set. Each year the company delivers a portfolio of specific improvement projects and reports performance annually in its publicly available Sustainable Development Report.

“Locally we take seriously our role in Newcastle, but we have also taken the step to describe the impact of our activities against the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.”

More than 80 per cent of the company’s spending is in the region - about $80 million in 2017, and 74 per cent of Port Waratah’s 318 employees live in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie local government areas.

“Our people are the heart and soul of our business. The quality of our people is key to our success and to attract and retain the best people we offer a market-leading employee value proposition,” Mr du Plooy said.

“The growth and contributions of our employees are an essential part of our continued success internationally and to the local region.

“I’m proud of our progress towards a more diverse and inclusive workforce, and how our teams have embraced our health and safety cultural programme, Work to Live.”

Mr du Plooy thanks the Hunter Business Awards for its recognition and said the company looked forward to representing the region in the state awards later in the year.
