For more than 20 years, the Samaritans have been hosting Christmas luncheons for more than 1000 less fortunate, homeless or lonely people living in our Newcastle region.   

The concept for this lunch is simple; bringing the local community together on Christmas Day for company, a meal and fun games in the sun. From cricket and football, basketball and kite flying, there is always something for everyone.  

Supported by up to 100 big-hearted volunteers in Newcastle, this event is focused on bringing people together, with the Samaritans giving their help, unconditional care and respect for individuals and families in this time of need.  

In its usual outdoor setting in the Newcastle Foreshore Railway Sheds, guests are served a delicious picnic hamper bag with a traditional Christmas Lunch. There is an abundance of laughter, festive entertainment, carols, gifts for all and of course a visit from the jolly man in red. 

Port Waratah has a long-standing relationship since 2009 with Samaritans as a major sponsor of the Christmas Lunch in the Park, providing essential funding for equipment, supplies, food, as well as several Port Waratah volunteers who help set up for this important event. 

Samaritan’s Christmas Lunch in The Park Coordinator, Dana Pichaloff, has kept this event running through COVID-19, all weather and all challenges continuing to help our families in need each Christmas.
