With two terminals operating at different rates and servicing different sized vessels and trains, Port Waratah can maximise our efficiency, making gains in throughput to meet the needs of our customers.

Carrington Terminal operates at a capacity of 2,500 tonnes per hour and is best suited for smaller vessels and trains. Kooragang Terminal, on the other hand, operates at a capacity of 10,500 tonnes per hour and is best suited for larger vessels and trains.

At peak times, both terminals work together near or at capacity to meet demand and, importantly, allow the Hunter Valley Coal Industry to export to destinations around the word with a range of variable port capabilities.

This level of service flexibility is unique to Port Waratah, and its value is further demonstrated during planned maintenance outages when either terminal can utilise available capacity to maintain high throughput levels and cover any maintenance disruption to loading streams.

As we undertook the Kooragang Shiploader Investment Programme four-month outage in 2025, Carrington Terminal services and the two remaining Kooragang Shiploaders stepped up to provide seamless service to meet customer needs.

Vessel sizes include:

• Handy Class, serviced at Carrington, up to 60,000 Tonnes loaded
• Panamax Class, serviced at Carrington and Kooragang 60,000-80,000 tonnes loaded
• Post-Panamax Class, serviced at Kooragang, 80,000-110,000 tonnes loaded
• Cape Class, serviced at Kooragang, over 110,000+ tonnes loaded

In 2025, we loaded 96.5 million tonnes of coal into 1,144 vessels for export, including 50 Handy Class, 160 Panamax Class, 711 Post-Panamax Class and 223 Cape Class.
