Coal Chain

Increase in Post Panamax Vessels

We have seen a significant increase in the calling of Post Panamax vessels to our terminal’s during 2025, an increase of 43 compared to 2024.

This is largely due to the wide beam and shallow draft characteristics, which is suitable for Newcastle Harbour and discharge ports draught restrictions. Supporting this trend is the recent vessel charter rate market which favours the use of Post Panamax vessels compared to Cape, traditional Panamax and Handy class vessels due to the economic benefits.

In 2025, the 1,144 vessels loaded at our terminals included:

  • 4% Handy Class – 50 vessels
  • 14% Panamax Class – 160 vessels
  • 62% Post Panamax Class – 711 vessels
  • 20% Cape Class – 223 vessels
