Improving biosecurity outcomes

Port Waratah manages its wharf facilities as designated biosecurity zones, where mosquitoes present a recognised biosecurity risk requiring ongoing control.

We conduct regular biosecurity audits at Carrington and Kooragang Terminals, particularly at our wharves, to identify potential mosquito breeding environments. Components of our water management system can create potential mosquito habitat, making regular inspections and active prevention essential.

Following the successful trial of a surface tension treatment that prevents mosquito larvae from developing, we implemented an innovative chemical delivery system to ensure consistent and effective protection across both terminals. This system uses mosquito control blocks housed in custom designed holders that are installed within site sumps, which improves treatment reliability.
