In 2025, Port Waratah’s emerging talent had the chance to see it all in action. As part of our Early Career Programme, our trainees, graduates, and apprentices participated in a coal chain tour to gain unique insights into how Port Waratah and its partners work together to keep the industry moving efficiently.

The group visited key partners including Svitzer (Tugboats), Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator (Logistics and planning), and ARTC (Rail), each offering a behind-the-scenes look at their operations. One of the highlights included boarding a tugboat and visiting Svitzer’s state-of-the-art training simulator. These experiences helped participants understand how each organisation contributes to the coal supply chain and where their own roles fit within the bigger picture.

The tour also provided valuable opportunities to connect with industry professionals and grow networks.

Tyran Cowling, Electrical Apprentice, shared,

"I learned so much more about the industry and can now confidently explain what has to happen to get coal from the mines to the customers.”

Alex Zhang, Graduate Engineer, added, 

“The experience gave me a much broader perspective on how the supply chain operates.” 

This annual tour is part of Port Waratah’s Early Career Programme, designed to broaden knowledge, build connections, and develop the next generation of leaders.
